4-H Tent at the Marquette County Fair
Hello 4-H Leaders ~
The theme for the 2012
4-H tent this year will be "Green and Growing". We would like
our 4-H groups to team up with the local business that promotes green living,
green power, or any other green ideas. Be creative! We hope that
each booth will provide an educational experience for all who attend. For
example if you know of a business that sells wind power products then have your
group approach that business and come up with a plan to learn as much about
their business as possible, then set up a display together promoting their
business in exchange for knowledge. It will teach 4-Hers and the
community more about living "green" while supporting our local
economy and will keep us all "Green and Growing".
If you have any
questions or would like any help with anything please give Kelly Conery a call
at 485-1651 or Becca Conery at 486-4369.
Thank You for Supporting
the 4-H Tent!

4-H Camp 2012
You have all been anxiously awaiting it, and now it is here! The 2012 Marquette County 4-H Summer Camp will be held July 10-12
at Clear Lake Education Center, located in the Hiawatha National Forest.
Campers (ages 9-13) will enjoy participating in a variety of fun, hands-on
educational activities while at camp, including a high ropes challenge, nature
exploration, swimming, astronomy, arts and crafts, drama, and group activities.
Youth do not have to be a current 4-H member to attend camp.
Older youth (ages 14 and up) are needed to serve as Junior
Counselors. Youth serving in these positions will provide leadership (along
with an Adult Counselor) to a cabin of younger campers. We are asking Junior Counselors to arrive a
day early to camp for training. We will get started in the early afternoon and
work on team building and leadership skills. Adult volunteers are needed to
serve as Counselors. Adults serving in these roles must complete the MSU
Extension Volunteer Selection Process before they are accepted as volunteers.
Adult Counselors provide leadership for a cabin of campers and youth
counselors.
The cost of 4-H Camp is $55 per youth already enrolled in 4-H ($65 for youth not yet enrolled in 4-H) and includes everything campers will need; daily meals, snacks, lodging, all program supplies, crafts, and instruction. Youth and adult counselors attend camp at no cost.
Space at camp is limited. Registration will be completed in the order that applications and payment are received by the MSU Extension office. The final day to register a camper (space permitting) is June 29, 2012. Junior and Adult Counselor applications must be submitted to the MSU Extension office no later than June 15, 2012.
For questions or more information, please contact the MSU Extension office, located at 184 US Hwy 41 East in Negaunee. Call 906.475.5731 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting or email deisenro@anr.msu.edu for more information.

Host families needed for 4-H Japan Exchange program!
Summer 2012
4-H has a wonderful opportunity for Michigan families to host a youth from Japan this summer. We are looking for families that have children between the ages of 10 and 16 to host a Japanese delegate (who are ages 12-16). The Japanese youth live with your family between July 22 and August 18. They are most interested in learning about the day-to-day life of American families, so there is no need to plan "special" activities or trips. Please consider participating in this amazing, life changing experience!
Youth delegate pictures and profiles can be viewed here:

Exploration Days 2012
Registration Books and Forms are now available at the Marquette County MSU Extension office or may be downloaded (see "Forms" below).
About 4-H Exploration Days
More than 2,500 students and adult chaperones will be on the Michigan State University campus June 20-22 for the 43rd annual 4-H Exploration Days. Participants stay in residence halls and attend sessions in their areas of interest ranging from veterinary medicine to Web design, performing arts, how to start their own business, organic farming and many more. Nearly 200 hands-on classroom and field trip sessions are offered. Participants from Marquette County must have turned 12 years old before January 1, 2012 in order to participate in the event.
Exploration Days, Michigan’s largest annual 4-H event, is designed to help students learn new ideas and techniques while exploring career options and developing decision-making, independence and teamwork skills. They also meet and interact with people from different backgrounds and areas throughout Michigan. 4-H volunteers and staff are on hand to offer oversight and guidance.
“Exploration Days gives 4-H youth an authentic collegiate experience,” says Judy Ratkos, MSU Extension 4-H Youth Development program leader and coordinator of the event. “They are exposed to things they cannot get at the local level. Information learned in a session may spark their interest in a college major or career.”
When not in sessions, students will have a plethora of recreation and learning choices. This year’s Exploration Days features tours of the MSU Skandalaris Football Center, Breslin Student Events Center, the MSU Dairy Store, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, the 4-H Children’s Gardens and a planetarium show. The opening night entertainment on June 20 features Judson Laipply, creator and performer of “The Evolution of Dance” and an award - winning speaker and inspirational comedian.
Here's a clip of Judson:

The Marquette County 4-H Council will provide $113.00 scholarships to youth who complete a Marquette County 4-H Council - Exploration Days Scholarship Application Form. The form must be received by the Marquette County MSU Extension office by April 20, 2012 in order for youth to get this scholarship.
State 4-H Scholarship
Each year the State 4-H office awards each county a limited number of Exploration Days Scholarships. These $40 scholarships are available to full time youth participants only. These scholarships are to support participation of financially limited youths who would otherwise not attend and to encourage and support youth who have not participated in Exploration Days in the past.
Registration Instructions and Deadlines
Please note: All participants MUST include 8 session choices on their registration form. You will not be registered unless your form has all 8 session choice lines completed.
Everything you need to register for Exploration Days is in the Registration Book. You can download the book (or only the forms) from this blog. Printed books are also available either from your club leader or at the MSU Extension office. Feel free to stop by and pick one up or contact the office and we can mail you the book and forms.
Sessions are assigned in the order that registrations are received, so early registration is highly encouraged! For the best chance of getting assigned to the sessions of your choice, have all paperwork completed and turned in to the Marquette County MSU Extension office no later than March 19, 2012. Scholarship applications are due April 20. The final day to register is April 27, 2012.
