2013 4-H Camp

 2012 4-H Camp Photo

You have all been anxiously awaiting it, and now it is here! The 2013 Marquette County 4-H Summer Camp will be held July 9-11 at Clear Lake Education Center, located in the Hiawatha National Forest. Campers (ages 9-13) will enjoy participating in a variety of fun, hands-on educational activities while at camp, including a high ropes challenge, nature exploration, swimming, astronomy, arts and crafts, drama, and lots of group activities. Youth do not have to be a current 4-H member to attend camp.

Older youth (ages 14 and up) are needed to serve as Junior Counselors. Youth serving in these positions will provide leadership (along with an Adult Counselor) to a cabin of younger campers. We are asking Junior Counselors to attend a Counselor Training at Moosewood Education Center the day before Camp begins (July 8th at 9:00 am). Adult volunteers are needed to serve as Counselors. Adults serving in these roles must complete the MSU Extension Volunteer Selection Process before they are accepted as volunteers. Adult Counselors provide leadership for a cabin of campers and youth counselors.

The Early Bird cost of 4-H Camp is $55 per youth already enrolled in 4-H ($65 for youth not yet enrolled in 4-H) and includes everything campers will need; daily meals, snacks, lodging, all program supplies, crafts, and instruction. This price goes up after June 8th to $70 for 4-H members and $80 for youth not yet enrolled. Youth and adult counselors attend camp at no cost.

Space at camp is limited. Registration will be completed in the order that applications and payment are received by the Marquette County 4-H Council. The final day to register a camper (space permitting) is June 28, 2013. Junior and Adult Counselor applications must be submitted to the MSU Extension office no later than June 14, 2013.

For questions or more information, please contact the MSU Extension office, located at 184 US Hwy 41 East in Negaunee. Call 906.475.5731 or email deisenro@anr.msu.edu.

Camper, Junior Counselor, and Adult Counselor forms are available at the Marquette County MSU Extension office, from your club leader, or can be downloaded here:

2013 4-H Exploration Days Information

Registration Books and Forms are now available at the Extension office and online (see "Forms" below).  Please read the information below carefully so you don't miss anything.
About 4-H Exploration Days
More than 2,500 students and adult chaperones will be on the Michigan State University campus June 19-21 for the 44th annual 4-H Exploration Days. Participants stay in residence halls and attend sessions in their areas of interest such as veterinary medicine, Web design, performing arts, how to start their own business, organic farming, and many more. 214 hands-on classroom and field trip sessions are offered this year. Participants from Marquette County must have turned 12 years old by January 1, 2013 in order to participate in the event.

Exploration Days, Michigan’s largest annual 4-H event, is designed to help students learn new ideas and techniques while exploring career options and developing decision-making, independence and teamwork skills. They also meet and interact with people from different backgrounds and areas throughout Michigan. 4-H volunteers and staff are on hand to offer oversight and guidance.

“Exploration Days gives 4-H youth an authentic collegiate experience,” says Judy Ratkos, MSU Extension 4-H Youth Development program leader and coordinator of the event. “They are exposed to things they cannot get at the local level. Information learned in a session may spark their interest in a college major or career.”

Wednesday Night’s Wharton Center Entertainment is the award-winning show by “The Magic Stu” - brimming with high-energy, side-splitting comedy and entertaining illusions. The Bonus Opening Show will be Anthony Ianni, former MSU basketball player and advocate for the Autism Alliance of Michigan.
When not in sessions, students will have a plethora of recreation and learning choices. This year’s Exploration Days features the following options:

Abrams Planetarium- Take in a narrated sky show to learn about the stars and planets.
Demmer Shooting Sports Education and Training Center -This MSU facility features the latest in shooting range technology and is designed to accommodate a variety of shooting sports activities. It promotes, advances, and encourages the safe use of firearms and archery equipment for programmatic and recreational use.

Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum -This new, world-class museum provides innovative educational and creative art including interactive exhibits to help visitors learn about the modern art on exhibit.
4‑H Children’s Garden- Experience the many themed gardens within the world-famous 4‑H Children’s Garden.

Jack Breslin Student Events Center -Tour the home of the MSU Spartan basketball teams and a variety of sports, music and other events. See the trophy cases, media room and “star signing wall” that are not normally open to the public.

MSU Animal Field Laboratory Tour -Travel by bus to visit either the MSU Dairy, Horse or Beef Facilities.

MSU Bug House- See the Entomology Department’s amazing collection of creepy critters – both alive and pinned.

MSU Dairy Store- See where MSU makes its very own ice cream and cheese, and consider buying a yummy snack while you’re there.
MSU Museum -Explore the animals, cultures, crafts and much more on display at MSU’s very own museum.

During your leisure time at 4‑H Exploration Days you can also bowl, shoot pool, dance, ice skate, swim and more!

The annual State 4-H Awards Celebration, a formal event celebrating the accomplishments of more than 160 Michigan 4-H members, takes place June 20. Marquette County has one youth competing for a State Award so please plan to attend and give your support.

A mandatory Exploration Days orientation meeting will be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday, June 6th. This is the standard orientation meeting, for youth who have not yet been to Exploration Days.
